Egypt national team goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal, popularly known as “Gabaski”, was forced off due to a leg injury during Egypt’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal victory over Morocco to spark concerns that the Pharaohs would have to use their third-string keeper in the semifinals against Cameroon. However, the 33-year-old stated in an interview that his injury was a leg cramp and that the Zamalek player should be available for the crucial match. Gabaski did not expect to play a substantial role in Cameroon but a hamstring strain for regular starter Mohamed El Shenawy has seen the veteran make his 4th and 5th national team appearances at the competition.
