The qualifying stages of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League continue on this week and the first ties of the Second Qualifying Round were completed on Tuesday with Africans contributing to the advancement of a couple of teams. The most notable moment came from Guinean forward Momo Yansane for a team known for utilizing African players, Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol, as Yansane provided the winner in a 1-0 aggregate victory for Sheriff over NK Maribor of Slovenia.
Nigerians Yusuf Otubanjo and Victor Olatunji each scored for Armenia’s Pyunik Yerevan and AEK Larnaca of Cyprus respectively but it was Otubanjo’s Pyunik who advanced decisively past F91 Dudelange of Luxembourg while Larnaca fell to Danish club FC Midtjylland in a penalty kick shootout.
