Playoff match needed to determine winner of Libya Premier League after Wednesday victories for Al Ahli and Al-Ittihad

As all three matches on the final day of the 2021-22 Libyan Premier League played out on Wednesday the drama did not stop coming with events working out to leave Tripoli-based sides Al Ahli and Al-Ittihad somehow tied on points, goal difference and goals scored at the top of the table. The two teams clinch qualification for the 2022-23 CAF Champions League but will need to have a playoff match to determine who the league winner is following Wednesday’s results.

Al Ahli should have finished the job after defender Ahmed El Trbi put his team in the lead early in the second half against Olympic Azzaweya. However with Ahli only needing one more goal to win the league on goal difference they failed to make the decisive breakthrough. A penalty kick opportunity in the 63rd minute for midfielder Abdulrauf Alshoushan saw his spot kick saved by the Olympic Azzaweya goalkeeper before Mohamed Abu Zraiq’s apparent goal was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee five minutes later, limiting Ahli to a 1-0 victory.

It seemed like Ahli’s 1-0 victory would be enough to see them to the top spot but late match drama saw Al-Ittihad somehow get the result they needed to stay in the title race. A goal in the 79th minute put Ittihad into the lead against Al Nasr but the visitors leveled in the first minute of second half stoppage time. Only a couple of minutes later it was Ittihad who got the goal they needed when a cross from the right wing somehow found its way over the Al Nasr goalkeeper and into the net to leave the Tripoli rivals level at the top.

Video of all the eventful moments on Wednesday are below.

Al Ahli Tripoli 1-0 Olympic Azzaweya

Al-Ittihad 2-1 Al Nasr
