South African coaching legend Pitso Mosimane is back at work after the announcement of his hiring by Saudi club Al-Ahli early on Sunday. The 58-year-old former CAF Champions League winner with Mamelodi Sundowns took a little over three months off from work following his departure from Egyptian giants Al Ahly in June but will take on an interesting challenge with the Jeddah-based Ahli, a competitive club in Saudi football who suffered a surprise relegation from the Saudi Pro League after the 2021-22 season. Mosimane will be charged with leading the club to promotion after a shaky start that has Ahli currently sitting in seventh after five matches.
A twenty month spell in charge at Al Ahly led to sixth trophies for Mosimane but came to a swift end after public criticism and a 2021-22 CAF Champions League final defeat to Moroccan club Wydad AC resulted in him deciding to mutually part ways with the decorated Cairo club. The popular coach is taking charge at a club that last won the Saudi Pro League during the 2015-16 season and were runners-up for the two following seasons before their shock relegation last campaign.
