CAF announces the re-opening of bidding process for 2025 AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) formally announced its re-opening of the bidding process for the 2025 edition of its flagship tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, on Wednesday after its decision to remove Guinea as the host due to issues with infrastructure and facilities. CAF notified all interested African football associations and federations to submit bids by the deadline of November 11 for consideration and the CAF Executive Committee will appoint a new host nation on February 10 in 2023.

Morocco and Algeria appear favorites to be appointed as the new hosts with media sources from both countries indicating that bids have already been submitted. Algeria will host the 2022 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) starting in January and CAF president Patrice Motsepe encouraged the country to bid in comments at the CHAN tournament draw on October 1.

Morocco is well established as a reliable host country with six stadiums meeting CAF regulations as well as a successful hosting of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations over the summer. Motsepe encouraged Guinea to submit a bid to host a future edition of the CHAN after visiting the country and Interim President Mamady Doumbouya to inform them of CAF’s decision to remove its hosting duties for the 2025 AFCON.
