2023 AFCON U-23 Qualifying: Incredible Fatawu goal gives Ghana valuable away goal in first leg draw with Algeria

In 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifying on Friday, Ghana played hosts Algeria to a 1-1 first leg draw in Annaba thanks to a strike from midfield by Sporting CP playmaker Abdul Fatawu Issahaku. The two teams will meet again on March 28 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi where a scoreless draw or victory will send Ghana through to the finals in Morocco set to take place starting in late June.

19-year-old Ghana star Fatawu stole the show when he launched an 85th minute effort from midfield to beat Algeria’s Teddy Boulhendi before the Nice goalkeeper could scramble back into position. Fatawu’s goal came after Ghana goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim kept the match scoreless by saving a penalty kick from Mounsef Bakrar in the 80th minute. Algeria managed to make a late charge and were awarded another penalty kick with Chamseddine Bekkouche putting his spot kick just beyond the diving Ibrahim.

Highlights from the match are below.
