Mozambique will be looking to advance out of the group stage for the first time when the Mambas take part at the 2022 African Nations Championship and Chiquinho Conde’s team were the first to arrive in Algeria over the weekend to finalize their preparations. Conde called in a list of 23 players for the competition from the country’s premier domestic league, the Moçambola, with plans for three or four friendly matches in Algeria before taking on Ethiopia in their opening Group A match on January 14.
Libya and hosts Algeria are also in Group A with Mozambique appearing to have long odds of earning a top-2 position but the country’s domestic league continues to produce talented players with top clubs Costa do Sol, UD Songo and Black Bulls being represented by fourteen players in the squad. Veteran forwards Isac Carvalho and Stelio Ernesto have plenty of experience with the senior national team while midfielder Shaquille Nangy and Costa do Sol defender Danilo are younger players who were regular contributors in 2022, helping the Mambas claim fourth place at the 2022 COSAFA Cup in July.
