In a tournament that has been reduced to three teams due to a highly publicized series of age cheating violations, the UNIFFAC region pushed on with its qualifying competition for the 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations over the past week and hosts Cameroon are the first confirmed team to secure their place at the finals in Algeria. Les Lionceaux dispatched their competition with ease, dominating Central African Republic 4-0 on January 12 before defeating Republic of Congo 2-0 on Sunday.
Angel Yondja scored three goals over the two matches to help Cameroon book their ticket to the AFCON U-17 that is set to take place in April. Due to the disqualifications of DR Congo and Chad as well as the absence of fellow UNIFFAC members Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe there were only three teams in the competition with the top-2 sides qualifying.
Cameroon have clinched first place leaving one spot at stake between Central African Republic and Republic of Congo, who will face off on Wednesday with Central African Republic needing a win to clinch qualification. Highlights from Cameroon’s victory over Central African Republic are below.
