Tanzania’s top division is back for 2023 and defending champions Young Africans were in action on Monday with a winning return, defeating Ihefu FC 1-0. Dependable forward Fiston Mayele came through for Yanga with a 64th minute strike, capitalizing on an error from the Ihefu goalkeeper to shoot into an unguarded net for his 15th league goal of the campaign. Yanga did not play to their full capabilities but will not complain about gaining three more points, moving them nine points ahead of rivals Simba in the championship chase.

In Monday’s later match Azam FC moved to within a point of Simba with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Tanzania Prisons. Prince Dube struck in the opening five minutes to set the tone with second half goals from rising Tanzania national team forward Abdul Abdul Hamisi Suleiman as well as Kipré Zunon. Azam keep the pressure on a Simba side that is transition following the hiring of new manager Robertinho.
