Group B is complete at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt and the stakes were low for all teams involved on Sunday. A pair of scoreless draws left attending fans with little entertainment on the day but supporters of Uganda, Republic of Congo and especially South Sudan will be pleased to see their teams taking part in the quarterfinals.
Uganda and Congo advance as the top-2 teams with five points each and the group winner will be determined by a drawing of lots with all tiebreakers equal between the two. Uganda played to a 0-0 draw with neighbors South Sudan on Sunday with the Hippos controlling play but failing to find a way past South Sudan goalkeeper Godwill Yogusuk.
South Sudan will qualify as one of the two best third-placed teams with four points from their three matches, setting them up for a quarterfinal where the Bright Stars can achieve a historical qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup if they can win. However it will be a difficult matchup against Group C winners The Gambia on Friday.
The matchup between Congo and Central African Republic was more even but ultimately ended scoreless as well. There was nothing but pride at stake for Central African Republic who were already eliminated after earning zero points from their first two matches but Les Fauves will leave Egypt with a point.
Highlights from both matches will be posted below when they are available.
