Egypt continued their revival in 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on Tuesday with a dominant 4-0 victory over Malawi away from home in Lilongwe. Tarek Hamed opened the scoring inside five minutes before Egypt went up 3-0 by the 20th minute courtesy of goals from Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah. Zizo finished the scoring early in the second half for Egypt who are now firmly in control of their destiny in Group D with nine points alongside Guinea at the top of the group. Malawi remain tied with Ethiopia on three points and must win their final two matches to have any chance of qualification.
The Pharaohs are a completely different side when star Mohamed Salah is in the team and the Liverpool forward helped his team get off to a dream start in rainy Lilongwe. Salah laid a pass into the path of Hamed for a crashing drive from distance that was too much for Malawi keeper Charles Thomu to handle. A 16th minute corner kick service from Salah was flicked on at the near post by Mostafa Mohamed and a goal line clearance attempt by the Malawian defense was blocked by Marmoush into the goal to double Egypt’s lead.
Malawi’s nightmare continued a few minutes later when Salah played a pass to Mohamed in the penalty area and the Nantes striker’s return pass was perfect for Salah who buried his shot from ten yards out. The hosts created some opportunities but the match was effectively over after Salah’s goal and Egypt had little issue holding on.
