Followers of Major League Soccer in the United States are becoming familiar with the story of Tanzanian forward Bernard Kamungo after the FC Dallas attacker scored his first MLS goal over the weekend to give the Texan club a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake. The 21-year-old, a native of Kasula near the Tanzania-Burundi border, relocated to Texas after spending time in a refugee camp as a child and was a star at Abilene High School before receiving $90 and encouragement from his brother to try out for FC Dallas’ reserve team North Texas SC. After two years with North Texas, Kamungo continues to impress and is awaiting an opportunity with the Tanzania national team.
Kamungo and recent South Sudan national team debutant Machop Chol both came on as substitutes to score their first MLS goals over the weekend. Watch their goals and other goal contributions from African players in the top three tiers of American soccer below.
