Six out of eight midweek matches ended in draws from the 28th matchday of South Africa’s DStv Premiership but there was a twist in the relegation battle on Wednesday. A first victory on the road in 2023 for Chippa United arrived at a crucial time for the Chilli Boys who continued the misery for Richards Bay with a 3-2 victory. Chippa attacker Aviwe Mqokozo chose the perfect time to score his first two professional goals with the 21-year-old substitute striking twice in the final twenty minutes for a comeback victory. Chippa are still in the relegation playoff spot but within reach of escaping while a dramatic fall for Richards Bay has the Kwazulu-Natal side only three points clear.
Marumo Gallants are level on twenty-nine points with Chippa after finding a late equalizer from Mpho Mvelase in their 2-2 draw at last placed Maritzburg United. The CAF Confederation Cup semifinalists are still in danger but maintain their three-point gap from Maritzburg, who will be devastated at missing out on a victory after United head coach Fadlu Davids emphasized the need for maximum points before the match.
Elsewhere it was draws everywhere. Orlando Pirates were held to a 1-1 result at home by Royal AM thanks to a late equalizer from AM’s Menzi Masuku. Tuesday’s match between third placed SuperSport United and Stellenbosch ended scoreless while hosts AmaZulu came back from a two-goal deficit to share the spoils with champions Mamelodi Sundowns in a 2-2 result. Pirates are in second place on fifty points with SuperSport two points behind in third while Kaizer Chiefs are four points back of SuperSport with a faint chance of sneaking into the top three.
