Ghana are the champions of the inaugural edition of the WAFU-Zone B U-20 Women’s Cup after the Black Princesses defeated rivals Nigeria in a penalty kick shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s final. Nigeria’s Flourish Sabastine equalized late on to cancel out a first half penalty kick from Stelle Nyamekwe, setting up a tense penalty kick shootout where Ghana converted three of their five attempts to confirm the victory. Burkina Faso defeated Benin 2-1 to win the Third Place Match.
A clumsy challenge on an aerial duel in the Nigerian penalty area set the stage for the opening goal from Nyamekwe, who fired low past Falconets goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi after her initial successful attempt required a retake due to encroachment. Nigeria refused to bow out quietly and took advantage of a goalkeeping error for Sabastine to level after Ghana keeper Afi Amenyeku spilled a cross. Amenyeku would atone for her error in the shootout, saving the first three spot kicks from the Falconets to clinch victory for the Black Princesses.
