Kakamega Homeboyz capture first major trophy with FKF Cup triumph

After coming close on a couple of occasions in the FKF Premier League, Kakamega Homeboyz have finally earned their first major trophy in Kenyan football. The club popularly known as Abana Beingo defeated local powerhouse Tusker FC by a 1-0 score in Saturday’s FKF Cup final at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. Former Kenya national team player Kevin Amwayi delivered a goal that was worthy of winning the trophy in the second half for the club from western Kenya, firing a dipping effort past Tusker goalkeeper Brian Bwire in the 73rd minute.

It will certainly be a measure of revenge for Homeboyz who came so close to capturing the Kenyan top division FKF Premier League last season only to falter at the end and lose out to Tusker. The Brewers, champions of the Premier League for two consecutive seasons, end the 2022-23 campaign without a trophy after falling just short in the league by one point to Gor Mahia and now Saturday’s result in the cup.

Kakamega Homeboyz will represent Kenya in CAF club competition for the first time in their history with Saturday’s victory clinching a spot in the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup. Homeboyz also received a handsome reward of 2 million Kenyan shillings (about $14,500) for their efforts. In the FKF Cup third place match played earlier on Saturday, AFC Leopards defeated Ulinzi Stars 1-0.

Highlights from both the final and the third place match are below.

Final: Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 Tusker FC

Third Place: AFC Leopards 1-0 Ulinzi Stars
