Al Ahly were only two matches away from an undefeated Egyptian Premier League season but a difficult test at runners-up Pyramids FC resulted in a 3-0 victory for the hosts on Sunday. An own goal from Ahly defender Mohamed Abdelmonem gave Pyramids the lead at halftime before goals from Fagrie Lakay and Mostafa Fathi confirmed the win. Ahly will finish up their league campaign at Al Masry on July 27 and the season is finished for Pyramids.
The hosts got off to a strong start and it was an even match between the two Cairo rivals. Towards the end of the first half Pyramids struck when attacking right back Mohamed Chibi sent in a low cross. Abdelmonem attempted to make a play by stretching his leg out but redirected the ball past a wrong footed Mohamed El Shenawy in the Ahly goal.
Ahly proceeded to control play after halftime but were frustrated by a strong performance from the Pyramids defense. It appeared inevitable that an equalizer would arrive but Pyramids instead doubled their lead against the run of play. In the 77th minute an excellent pass from Mahmoud Ouka sent Lakay behind the Ahly defense and the South African forward poked his finish past an onrushing El Shenawy. Pyramids added one more in stoppage time after El Shenawy spilled a Mahmoud Saber shot into the path of Fathi for an easy tap in.
