Uncertainty continues to cloud the status of Gabon national team playmaker Guelor Kanga as the Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) announced the date of the hearing that will determine whether FEGAFOOT has been fielding Kanga as an ineligible player. The Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA) claimed that Kanga is ineligible because he was in fact born in Congo and that FEGAFOOT has falsified his documents. Foot.cd presents its research that Kanga’s mother passed away in 1986, making it impossible for Kanga to have been born in Gabon in 1990 as listed.
This is a situation that continues to develop as FEGAFOOT’s projected position of confidence in overcoming the case has given way to multiple postponements. If Kanga is found to have been ineligible then DR Congo’s national team would likely benefit by being awarded Gabon’s Africa Cup of Nations spot since they finished third in Group D of AFCON qualifying behind Gabon.
