APR hold AS Kigali to maintain unbeaten run

It is now the business end of the shortened Rwanda Premier League season with the top-two teams from the initial group stage placed into a championship group and those who failed to qualify put into the relegation table. The second round of the championship stage placed the two top teams in Kigali against each other, AS Kigali and Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR FC), and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday. Both teams now sit on four points at the top of the table in the early stages following the result.

The match got off to a fast paced start featuring opportunities for both teams in the early stages. Hosts AS Kigali started the scoring in the 32nd minute when Nigerian striker Abubakar Lawal surged into the box and snuck by an APR defender before firing a calm finish into the far corner. It wasn’t enough to keep the Army club from obtaining a point on the day however.

APR continued to find room on the left flank and attacked on that wing once again, a low cross moving tantalizingly across the AS Kigali penalty area before Rwanda international winger Lague Byiringiro provided the finish to equalize proceedings. Byiringiro, who had just completed a trial period in Switzerland with FC Zurich and is rumored to be making an impending move to European football, helped APR maintain a league unbeaten run that stretches back to May of 2019.
