The undefeated run for the Rwanda Premier League’s top two teams, APR FC and AS Kigali, continues following their wins on Wednesday in the championship stage of the shortened league season. Both teams won 1-0 with APR’s victory coming against Rayon Sports while AS Kigali found three points out of their contest against Marines FC.
APR had a tough contest against nationally popular side Rayon Sports, prevailing in a match that could have gone either way. The Army club nearly went down in the 62nd minute when the APR keeper could only get a weak hand on a cross but a Rayon player could only direct his finish into the side netting with an empty goal begging. The resolve of APR against a scrappy opponent was rewarded with a late winner in the 89th minute. Lague Byiringiro danced on the corner of the Rayon penalty area before passing inside to Kevin Ishimwe, who cut inside in traffic and unleashed a sudden curling effort that zipped into the goal before the Rayon goalkeeper could react.
Kigali had a little more of a comfortable victory, utilizing a 30th minute goal from Karera Hassan to obtain three valuable points against Marines. With two matches left to play for both teams and a draw in their only encounter of the championship round, it appears that the league title may come down to goal differential. AS Kigali currently have a +9 GD with 11 goals scored, APR are at +8 with 9 scored.
