Former English Premier League and South Africa national team star striker Benni McCarthy will be on the bench for Manchester United as a member of manager Erik Ten Hag’s staff this season after signing up to be a coach for the Red Devils. The 44-year-old joins following a spell as manager of South African club AmaZulu in the country’s DStv Premiership, where he led the Durban-based club to their best all-time finish of second place during the 2020-21 season.
Ten Hag explained that he added McCarthy to his staff to help out with the team’s attack and positioning and values McCarthy as a unique voice and perspective. The former Ajax manager cited McCarthy’s experience in the English Premier League with clubs such as West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers and McCarthy was in attendance at Manchester United’s friendly match against Rayo Vallecano over the weekend to get up to speed.
