African and Moroccan champions Wydad AC moved back to the top of the table in domestic league play on Saturday following a 1-0 road victory over Mouloudia Oujda. Wydad remain undefeated in Morocco’s Botola Pro and move two points ahead of Rabat-based club ASFAR thanks to a goal from Senegalese striker Bouly Sambou, who towered above the defense to head in a 25th minute corner kick for his third goals of the season. Sambou, acquired from ASC Jaraaf in his native country, continues to show signs of being the replacement Wydad needs after losing last season’s league top scorer Guy Mbenza.
Wydad’s rivals Raja needed to bounce back from a loss in last weekend’s Casablanca Derby and the Green Eagles did just enough to secure three points at home in a 1-0 win over FUS Rabat. Facing a club in strong form it was never going to be easy for Raja but a disastrous own goals in the second minute from FUS defender El Medhi El Bassil was just what the offensively challenged hosts needed. Raja move up to ninth position where they have nine points, eight back of leaders Wydad.
Highlights are below from both games as well as the goals from a thrilling 3-2 road victory for Maghreb Fez, who added to last place IR Tanger’s misery on Friday.
