The draw for the 2022 African Nations Championship was carried out by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Saturday at the Algiers Opera House in host nation Algeria. The competition is set to take place in early 2023 with the opening match kicking off on January 13 and the final wrapping up the tournament on February 4. In a new format for the competition there are eighteen qualified teams put into five groups with Groups A, B and C having four teams and Groups D and E each having three teams.
Hosts Algeria were placed alongside Ethiopia, Mozambique and fellow North African nation Libya while defending champions Morocco are joined by Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana in Group C. DR Congo, the only other nation to win the competition twice along with Morocco, are in what appears to be the “Group of Death” with Uganda, Ivory Coast and Senegal in Group B.
