CAF Confederation Cup: Azam FC and ASO Chlef fall in penalty kicks, FUS Rabat and Stade Malien advance comfortably

The first round of qualifying in the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup concluded over the weekend with a couple of lopsided results while several clubs had to struggle to advance. FUS Rabat of Morocco, Stade Malien, Zambia’s MUZA FC and AS Arta of Djibouti advanced comfortably but Algeria’s ASO Chlef and Azam FC of Tanzania fell to defeat by the narrowest of margins in penalty kicks. Here is a summary of the results with the full list of scores further below as well as the second round matches and highlights from the weekend.

For FUS Rabat and Stade Malien it was a relaxing weekend for supporters of the clubs as their teams progressed courtesy of strong first leg results. FUS defeated Benin’s Lotto-Popo FC 2-0 away from home to confirm a 5-0 aggregate victory and will face defending Confederation Cup champions USM Alger in what figures to be a heated second round duel. Stade Malien completed a lopsided 7-2 aggregate victory over Liberia’s Watanga FC with a 4-1 home victory on Saturday.

Algerian cup winners ASO Chlef were not so fortunate after a tight clash with Bendel Insurance of Nigeria, who moved on to the second round with a penalty kick shootout victory away from home following a 1-0 second leg defeat. Azam FC fell in the same manner after taking an early 2-0 lead at home against Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar Kenema, who fought back to level the aggregate score before stunning the Tanzanian club in penalties.

Dreams FC of Ghana needed to fight back as well after falling behind at home against Milo FC but it was veteran striker John Antwi who scored two late goals to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory. Despite lacking the ability to host the second leg of their clash against Senegal’s Casa Sports, Burkina Faso’s Étoile Filante progressed on the away goal rule following a 0-0 draw in Ivory Coast. Guinea’s Académie SOAR advanced in the same manner with a 0-0 draw at home against AS Douanes of Mauritania.

Elsewhere, Tanzania’s Singida Fountain Gate kept their supporters in suspense but held on to advance 4-3 on aggregate despite a 2-0 defeat to Zanzibar’s JKU SC. Al-Hilal Benghazi, Botswana’s Gaborone United and Ivory Coast’s AFAD Djékanou also advanced with positive second leg results.
