Cameroon releases 2022 FIFA World Cup squad list

Cameroon are the first African national team to release their official squad list for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after revealing the 26 players who will represent the Indomitable Lions on Wednesday night. The Indomitable Lions will compete in Group G, opening up their campaign against Switzerland on November 24 before facing Serbia on November 28 and group favorites Brazil on December 2.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar leads a well known forward corps into Qatar and is joined by Karl Toko Ekambi as well as on fire Bayern Munich forward Eric Choupo-Moting and regular starter Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu of Dynamo Moscow. Brentford forward and recent commitment to the Indomitable Lions Bryan Mbeumo is in the squad and will provide serious competition.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa will be in the squad after all with the Napoli midfielder set for a starting spot in the center of the park. Hellas Verona player Martin Hongla is the other likely starter with the third midfield slot in manager Rigobert Song’s lineup likely to go to Swansea City player Olivier Ntcham or Pierre Kunde of Olympiacos. Midfielder Jerome Ngom Mbekeli is one of two domestic-based players in the squad along with Coton Sport forward Souaibou Marou.

The defense saw a surprise omission with Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui out of the reckoning. Jean-Charles Castelletto of FC Nantes appears to be guaranteed a starting spot in the center of defense with veteran Nicolas Nkoulou and French-born Stade Rennais stopper Christopher Wooh competing for the other central defender position. Seattle Sounders left back Nouhou Tolo is set to start in Qatar and is joined by fellow American-based right back Olivier Mbaizo, who played for Philadelphia Union at the 2022 MLS Cup final. Inter Milan goalkeeper André Onana will be handed the gloves with Saudi-based keeper Devis Epassy set to be the backup.
