Group B got underway at the 2023 COSAFA Cup with a victory for Les Coelacanthes of Comoros who defeated fellow island nation Seychelles by a 3-0 score on Thursday. Affane Djambae, Ibroihim Youssouf and Boina Bacar Raïdou all scored for Comoros who will face Zambia in their next fixture on Sunday. Seychelles are set to take on Malawi on the same day.
Seychelles managed to hold off their more pedigreed opponents in the early stages but it did not take long before opportunities began to arrive for the Comorian team. After hitting the crossbar in the opening fifteen minutes Les Coelacanthes took the lead soon before the half hour mark through Djambae who flicked a clever header past out of position Seychelles goalkeeper Alvin Michel from a lofted ball by Youssouf Bakri.
Ibroihim Youssouf doubled the lead before halftime with the best goal so far in the early stages of the competition, taking a pass from Bacar and launching a blast from distance that left Michel with no chance as the ball nestled into the top corner.
Bacar joined the list of Comorian goal scorers before the hour mark after he latched onto a cross from the left wing and his shot ricocheted off Michel and back off Bacar into the goal. Seychelles produced a couple of chances in the final twenty minutes but Comoros keeper Salimo Velonjara was not troubled too much on the day.
