COSAFA Cup: Lesotho control the proceedings in comfortable win over Mauritius

Lesotho were in full control on Friday against Group C foes Mauritius as The Crocodiles opened up their 2023 COSAFA Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over The Dodos. Neo Mokhachane gave Lesotho the lead on the quarter hour mark and Sera Motebang wrapped it up with a late goal to confirm three points. Lesotho will look to continue their winning form against Mozambique on Monday after Mauritius face Angola.

Mauritius featured plenty members of the team that finished in second place at the Four Nations competition the island nation hosted in June but The Dodos were no match for Lesotho. The Mauritian defense was exposed in the 15th minute by an incisive pass from Jane Thabantso and Mokhachane finished into an empty net after onrushing goalkeeper Kevin Jean-Louis failed to play the ball.

Thabantso, Lesotho’s all-time leading scorer, should have extended his team’s lead on a couple of occasions but was guilty of missing very good opportunities. However the introduction of South Africa based striker Motebang early in the second half provided The Crocodiles with an extra finisher. The Royal AM player applied a calm low finish past Jean-Louis in stoppage time after latching onto a pass from Lisema Lebokollane and muscling off a defender.
