COSAFA Cup: Lesotho defeat Mozambique to remain perfect in Group C

The results in Group C of the 2023 COSAFA Cup continued to defy expectations in Monday’s second match as Lesotho shut out Mozambique by a 1-0 score in rainy KwaMashu. Neo Mokhachane finished an excellent team move for the only goal of the match towards the end of the first half, keeping The Crocodiles on top of the group with two wins from two matches. Lesotho will finish up against Angola and Mozambique take on Mauritius where both Lusophone countries need victories.

The rainy and windy conditions seen in the earlier match on Monday between Mauritius and Angola only intensified for the later match. Mozambique were eager to grab a first victory of the tournament but met a Lesotho side who continued to be well organized and keen to take their chances.

In the 34th minute Lesotho produced a team moment of magic to take the lead. Midfielder Tshwarelo Bereng received the ball outside the Mozambican penalty area and chipped a pass to find the run of Rethabile Rasethuntsa, whose low cross found Mokhachane for an excellent finish.

Mozambique occasionally looked dangerous but sloppy conditions at the Princess Magogo Stadium did not help the cause of the Mambas. Dário had the best chance soon before halftime when he was left alone to receive a right wing cross at the far post but his poor diving header went harmlessly wide. Lesotho continued their strong defensive performance in the second half against a Mozambique attack that was largely ineffective.
