Malawi surprised neighbors Zambia on the opening day of Group B action at the 2023 COSAFA Cup and The Flames completed their perfect run in the group stage on Tuesday. A 2-0 defeat of Comoros confirmed qualification to the semifinals for Malawi who had little issue dispatching Les Coelacanthes. Zambia finished in second place with a 4-2 victory over Seychelles and now the Chipolopolo will have to wait and see if they qualify as the best second placed team out of the three groups.

For Malawi the victory wraps up a group stage that saw them score five goals while conceding zero. Chawanangwa Kaonga converted from the penalty spot in the 30th minute and then provided the assist for Patrick Mwaungulu to score Malawi’s second six minutes later. The Flames are now one victory away from equaling their best-ever participation at the COSAFA Cup, where they last finished runners-up twenty years ago at the 2003 edition.

Zambia dominated minnows Seychelles by taking a 4-0 lead with goals from Albert Kangwanda, Kiliam Kanguluma, Golden Mashata and Fredrick Mulambia. However the Chipolopolo conceded two late goals to The Pirates which damaged their goal difference leaving it at +2.
