Cyriel Dessers jets into Glasgow for physical to join Rangers

Days after another African attacker, Senegal’s Abdallah Sima, joined up with Rangers FC the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership runners-up are set to sign Nigeria national team striker Cyriel Dessers pending a physical. If all goes well with his examination early this week the 28-year-old striker will join on a four-year contract from Italian club Cremonese. Scottish outlet Daily Record cites Belgian media reports that Rangers will pay a little over £4 million for Dessers.

Dessers arrived in Italy to boost the Cremonese attack after the club earned promotion to the top division Serie A for the 2022-23 season but went back down with a 19th place finish. The Belgian-born Nigeria international scored 7 goals in 29 appearances for the club following a move from KRC Genk in his home country and will hope to find some stability in his club career after signing a long-term contract with Rangers.

The physically strong marksman enjoyed the most success in his career in Dutch football where he accumulated 29 goals in 40 appearances for NAC Breda during the 2016-17 season in the second tier Eerste Divisie. An inconsistent two-year spell with Twente in the top tier Eredivisie was followed by a successful season with Heracles which earned him a move to Genk.

After falling out of favor at the Belgian club a prolific loan spell with Dutch club Feyenoord earned him a €6.5 million transfer to Cremonese but inconsistent form and injuries down the stretch left him unavailable to help the club’s unsuccessful bid to avoid relegation. Dessers made his debut for Nigeria, the country of his mother, in March 2020 under head coach at the time Gernot Rohr and has made 4 appearances with 1 goal scored against Mexico in a 2022 friendly.
