The Gambia made it two wins from two friendly matches in Turkey when they edged out the Sparrow Hawks of Togo on Tuesday, 1-0. The match lacked much in the way of fluidity and set pieces were the primary means of generating chances for both sides. In the first half Togo had one cracking long range shot that beat Gambia keeper Baboucarr Gaye but went off the post while Gambia nearly found the opener themselves at the end of the half.
Even less opportunities were to be had in the second half, but a moment of quality from a set piece helped the Scorpions of Gambia to victory. A 74th minute free kick was well whipped in diagonally and AC Horsens defender James Gomez, recently signed on a permanent basis from Real Banjul, placed a perfect header that bounced into the far post for the 19-year-old’s first international goal on his senior national team debut.
