After qualifying for the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals, Marumo Gallants are taking advantage of their momentum by transferring positive form into their push to avoid relegation from the DStv Premiership. Gallants earned three more important points on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over fellow relegation fighters Chippa United and are now a point out of the drop zone. In Wednesday’s other match from South Africa’s top division, crowned champions Mamelodi Sundowns came back from a goal down to draw Golden Arrows 1-1 in Durban.
After Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro gave vising Chippa a first half lead, Gallants striker Ranga Chivaviro helped his team fight back in the second half. The journeyman attacker converted two penalty kicks early in the second half before clinically finishing past Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his fourteenth goal in all competitions after being sent in alone by a Katlego Otladisa pass. Gallants are now a point ahead of Chippa in fourteenth position, dropping the Chilli Boys to the relegation playoff spot in fifteenth place.
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is exploring his squad’s capabilities after clinching another DStv Premiership crown with numerous matches remaining but the results are not ideal. The visitors controlled play throughout but fell behind to a first half Ryan Moon goal that gave hosts Golden Arrows a halftime lead. Former SuperSport United player Sipho Mbule scored an equalizer for Sundowns in the second half, giving the Brazilians their third consecutive draw in domestic league play.
