One round of matches remain in South Africa’s DStv Premiership after Saturday’s action involving fourteen teams and the relegation battle remains intense. Last placed Maritzburg United needed a victory to keep their top division hopes alive and a first half goal from Amadou Soukouna gave The Team of Choice three critical points in a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC.
With Chippa United on the wrong end of a 4-0 thrashing from TS Galaxy on Saturday, the Chilli Boys are tied with Maritzburg and Marumo Gallants on twenty-nine points. The bottom team out of the three will be automatically relegated while the team second from bottom enters a relegation playoff with two teams from the second tier Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Towards the other end of the table, a 1-0 home victory for SuperSport United over Kaizer Chiefs confirmed a top three finish for SuperSport and leaves them equal on fifty-one points with Orlando Pirates in second place. The result means Chiefs cannot finish beyond fourth place and will not compete in CAF club competition for a second consecutive season.
Pirates could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Sekhukhune United despite being the dominant team for long stretches but have a slight two-goal advantage in the goal differential tiebreaker. A CAF Champions League spot is the prize for whoever finishes in second place between the two clubs, who are both on the road in their final fixtures next weekend against AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United respectively.
