With Cape Town City the only South African team occupied by CAF club competition for the weekend the country’s DStv Premiership continued on with its top teams in action on Saturday. A familiar team occupies top spot with Mamelodi Sundowns defeating Golden Arrows 2-1 at home. All the action came around the halftime mark with Sundowns taking the lead just before the break when striker Peter Shalulile was tripped up in the Arrows penalty area before getting up and converting his penalty kick. Pule Mmodi leveled for the visitors before an own goal gave Sundowns their winner towards the hour mark.
Sundowns are two points ahead of Orlando Pirates who managed to score two goals in a shutout victory over TS Galaxy. Zakhele Lepasa’s pace caused issues for the Galaxy defense and his 6th minute shot was deflected in by Spiwe Msimango who was credited with an own goal. Lepasa was given credit for Pirates’ second goal when his hopeful chipped attempt from distance found its way over Galaxy goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi, whose poor showing completed a miserable outing for the visitors.
In the other action from the weekend so far, Stellenbosch FC and SuperSport United each earned 2-1 road victories over Swallows FC and Maritzburg United in a couple of mid-table battles. AmaZulu failed to stay in the running for top spot after losing 2-1 at home to struggling Chippa United, who were playing their first match since sacking former manager Daine Klate following their midweek defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.
