Chippa United have never defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in DStv Premiership play and that trend continued on Saturday as Masandawana made it four wins from four competitive matches for the 2023-24 season. Sundowns won by a 2-0 score at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to continue their iron tight grip on the top spot. After hosts Chippa got off to a decent start an efficient end to the first half left Sundowns two goals up with a strike from Aubrey Modiba followed by an own goal from Chippa defender Justice Chabalala.
Sundowns are now five points clear of second placed SuperSport United following their latest result. Modiba found the net for the first time in the new season after a brilliant pass from playmaker Themba Zwane put the left wingback in behind the defense in the 36th minute. Chabalala then got his clearance attempt all wrong a few minutes later when he attempted to deal with a Lucas Ribeiro Costa cross.
In the earlier matches played on Saturday, AmaZulu and Richards Bay played to a scoreless draw after Polokwane City defeated Cape Town Spurs 3-1 in a battle between clubs newly promoted to the top division. Spurs begin their DStv Premiership campaign with three consecutive defeats and Polokwane are off to an encouraging start with two wins from three.
