Wednesday was an excellent opportunity for an Orlando Pirates side high on confidence to announce their intentions on challenging for the DStv Premiership title. However things did not go to plan in a 1-0 home defeat against reigning dominant club Mamelodi Sundowns. A Lucas Ribeiro Costa penalty kick inside the opening fifteen minutes was the difference as both teams generally cancelled each other out to the advantage of the visitors from Pretoria.
Sundowns remain perfect through seven matches and are seven points ahead of nearest competitors Golden Arrows, who came back from an early deficit to win 2-1 at bottom side Cape Town Spurs. SuperSport United are a point behind Arrows after edging Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 courtesy of Terrence Dzvukamanja’s second minute volley. Chiefs now have only eight points from their seven matches as the pressure continues to increase on head coach Molefi Ntseki.
Swallows FC and Sekhukhune United close out the top five with ten points each from six matches. Swallows won 2-0 at Stellenbosch FC and Larry Bwalya scored the only goal in Sekhukhune’s 1-0 victory at Royal AM.
