While defending DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns were busy with CAF Champions League duty, several matches took place over the weekend in South Africa’s top division with victories from Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM highlighting the action. Royal AM moved into second place for the time being following an opportunistic 2-0 victory at SuperSport United on Sunday. SuperSport had the majority of opportunities, but a sublime cross from Zukile Mkhize set up Mxolisi Macuphu to give the visitors a surprise lead in the 9th minute. The hosts then saw Jamie Webber’s penalty kick denied a minute later before South Africa national team striker Victor Letsoalo capitalized on a second half spot kick to put Royal AM beyond reach.
Royal AM are in second place with a point separating them from Kaizer Chiefs in third, who snatched three points at Baroka FC courtesy of a last-second strike from Zimbabwean forward Khama Billiat. While Chiefs have struggled in recent times to close the gap on Sundowns, Amakhosi still have two games to make up on Royal AM and three on the league leaders, making second place if not the top spot more than reachable.
Highlights are below from the games involving Royal AM and Chiefs.
