Little changed on the Egyptian Premier League table after all of Egypt’s most well known clubs were involved with draws in the thirteenth round on Wednesday and Thursday. Al Ahly remained four points ahead at the top following a scoreless draw at home against Al Masry, failing to break down the visiting side who defended in numbers. Defending champions continued their poor form in a scoreless draw of their own in Alexandria against Al Ittihad as manager Jesualdo Ferreira struggles to find answers for a team that only has two goals in three games so far in 2023.
Future FC failed to take advantage of a hot start and could only managed a 1-1 home draw against Pyramids FC. Former Ahly and Egypt national team striker Marwan Mohsen’s weak 12th minute penalty kick was easily saved by Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy before midfielder Mohamed Reda got it right for the hosts on a second spot kick attempt ten minutes later. Pyramids controlled the match and found a well deserved leveler late on when Ibrahim Adel’s cross attempt went in thanks to an awful goalkeeping error from Future’s Mahmoud Genesh.
The big winners of the round were popular club Ghazl El Mahalla. The team from the Nile Delta edged ENPPI 1-0 with a goal from former Enyimba forward Gabriel Orok, moving Mahalla into fifth position. Relegation battlers El Dakhleya and Bank Al Ahly had the most entertaining match with a 3-3 shootout that featured a last gasp equalizer for the National Bank of Egypt club. Smouha finally found their scoring touch through new loan signing Hossam Hassan from Al Ahly, who took the captain’s armband at the club where he has enjoyed success and scored twice in a 2-1 win over El Gaish.
