Egyptian Premier League: Pyramids take another step towards the CAF Champions League

The thirtieth matchday of the Egyptian Premier League took place over the last week and it is Pyramids FC who continued their push for qualification to the 2023-24 CAF Champions League with an important 1-0 victory over Future FC. Five minutes after a Video Assistant Referee review cancelled out a potential opening goal for visitors Future, Mostafa Fathi scored the only goal of the match for hosts Pyramids in the 66th minute.

The former Zamalek player was rewarded for his run into the Future penalty area when he reacted quickest to a deflected pass from Walid El Karti and headed past goalkeeper Mahmoud Genesh. Pyramids are now seven points clear of third placed Future in second place and are set to join league leaders Al Ahly as the representatives of Egypt in next season’s CAF Champions League.

Zamalek are regaining their form under head coach Juan Carlos Osorio after showing worrying signs of dropping out of qualification for CAF club competition next season. Seifeddine Jaziri scored twice with assists from Zamalek star Zizo in a 2-1 victory over Al Ittihad on Monday. Zamalek are now a point behind Future FC with one more match played. It is certain that The White Castle will represent Egypt in continental competition next season but supporters will have to be content with a place in the CAF Confederation Cup rather than the Champions League.
