Egyptian Premier League Wrap: Zamalek earn road victory over Al Ittihad

Five games took place in the Egyptian Premier League on Monday and Tuesday with Zamalek’s clash against Al Itttihad in Alexandria highlighting the group of fixtures. The reigning champions took down ten-man Ittihad 2-0 on Tuesday with league leading scorer Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” scoring a brilliant blast from long distance to open the scoring in the 13th minute, the ball rattling off the crossbar and just over the goal line.

After Burkinabé defender Saïdou Simporé was sent off just before halftime, the visitors went on to dominate the second half before Zizo picked out Mohamed Abdel Ghani with a corner kick for the center back to head in for Zamalek’s second. Zamalek are four points ahead of Al Ahly at the top but have played three more matches than their rivals, making the lead appear to be temporary.

Every match on Monday and Tuesday ended in shutouts for the victors. In Tueday’s other match, Amr Emad’s 30-yard blast on the half hour mark gave Zizo’s aforementioned strike good competition for the best goal in El Gaish’s 1-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra, moving Gaish into tenth place.

Pharco FC moved into sixth place for the time being thanks to Shokry Naguib’s 62nd minute penalty kick in a 1-0 shutout of Arab Contractors. The top division newcomers continue to impress after holding Zamalek to a 0-0 draw on the road last week. Ghazl El Mahalla have moved themselves into a mid-table position after earning their second consecutive victory with a 1-0 result over slumping Misr Lel Makkasa.

Finally, El Ismaily moved out of last place with a 2-0 road victory over Eastern Company, leaving the promoted side taking their place in the basement. Mohamed El Shami scored both goals to make it three in two matches for the former Zamalek forward.

Highlights are below from all of Monday and Tuesday’s games.

Al Ittihad 0-2 Zamalek

El Gaish 1-0 Ceramica Cleopatra

Pharco 1-0 Arab Contractors
