When Ethiopian Insurance FC made their return to the Ethiopian Premier League this season from the country’s second tier and were welcomed with a 7-1 thrashing by defending champions Saint George SC, it seemed unlikely the club would be in the top half of the table after five matches. Not only are Medhin in the top half, however, but they are tied atop of the table with Saint George following a 2-1 victory over Defence Force on Wednesday.
Insurance got off to a good start when Kitika Jima’s cross was turned into his own net by Defence Force defender Ahmed Reshid in the 20th minute before Mekelakeya equalized through captain Behailu Girma. In the end it was former Karela United star Umar Bashiru who scored his first goal for Medhin to earn the club three points when substitute Yared Kassaye made his way down the left wing and crossed for the Ghanaian to head home. Ethiopian Insurance are now on twelve points from five games following the result.
Another Ghanaian was involved in Wednesday’s other match as Mawuli Osei scored in Bahir Dar Kenema’s 2-0 victory over another promoted club, Legetafo Legedadi. On Thursday, Ethiopian Coffee and Hadiya Hossana both earned wins to move themselves up to ten points each and within striking distance of Saint George and Ethiopian Insurance.
