The 2023-24 edition of Kenya’s FKF Premier League is underway and it appears that many teams continue to be in the process of finding their rhythm for the new season. Seven goals were scored from the eight matches played over the weekend with three teams starting off their campaigns with victories. Nzoia Sugar, newly promoted Murang’a SEAL FC and defending champions Tusker FC began on the right foot by earning maximum points.
Tusker needed to scrap and claw their way to victory at Bandari FC but it was a successful outing in the end for the Brewers. Ugandan forward Deogracious Ojok found the net close to halftime after a quickly taken corner kick bounced around in the penalty area before the former BUL FC marksman turned and bounced his finish just inside the post. Despite a red card to Tusker shortly before the hour mark the defending champions were able to hold on for a victory.
Nzoia Sugar rose to prominence last season with a strong top-five finish and the club from Bungoma in the west of Kenya continued their momentum into the new season. The hosts fell behind in the first half but restored parity early in the second half through Victor Haki who finished after receiving a cross from the left wing. Just when it looked the teams were headed for a draw it was substitute Joseph Oyugu who stormed in to meet a floated free kick with a bouncing header for the stoppage time winner.
Last season’s runners-up Gor Mahia met Sofapaka FC for their opening clash that began on a somber note following the passing of Raphael Asudi who represented both clubs during his career. Darius Msagha gave visitors Sofapaka a lead just before halftime but last season’s top scorer Benson Omala equalized with a late penalty kick for Gor.
