Gaston Sirino’s actions were inappropriate, says Mamelodi Sundowns boss Manqoba Mngqithi

Uruguayan playmaker Gaston Sirino has been an integral part of Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance in South African football in recent years but the inevitable transfer speculation surrounding the 30-year-old has been a cause for concern for over a year now. The links to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in particular have led to issues between Sirino and Sundowns’ management because of former Sundowns manager and current Ahly boss Pitso Mosimane’s declared interest in bringing the player to Egypt.

After Sundowns’ 2-0 first leg CAF Champions League defeat to Ahly, the tension reached a breaking point when Sirino left the pitch in an Ahly shirt and expressed his admiration for the Egyptian club in post-match comments. IOL covers the fallout from Sirino’s actions and comments from Sundowns’ coach Manqoba Mngqithi ahead of the crucial second leg encounter on Saturday.
