Only five points separate first place from sixth position in the Ghana Premier League but it appears Hearts of Oak are positioning themselves for a run at top side Aduana Stars following the weekend’s matches. It was not straightforward for the Phobians in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Berekum Chelsea but the hosts found three goals in the final stretch of the match, giving their supporters in Accra confidence along with the return of players like Konadu Yiadom, Seidu Suraj and captain Gladson Awako from international duty with Ghana at the 2022 African Nations Championship.
Hearts are now four points back of Aduana Stars, who did well to earn a point against Bechem United on their trip to the Ahafo Region. Aduana and the Hunters played to a scoreless draw where opportunities were few and far between, keeping the league leaders out of Hearts of Oak’s immediate reach while Bechem miss out on a chance to claim second place.
Asante Kotoko are now five points behind Aduana after the defending GPL champions fell on the road to Dreams FC by a 2-0 score. Young Beninese forward Aholou Avocevou took advantage of poor set piece marking from the Porcupines to sneak in and confidently volley a free kick service past goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim and Agyenim Boateng Mensah completed Kotoko’s misery with his second half goal to double the lead. Kotoko are tied on 27 points with Bechem United as well as Bibiani Gold Stars and Accra Lions who played to a 2-2 draw on Monday.
