Ghana Premier League: Home teams go undefeated on opening weekend

The Ghana Premier League began its 2023-24 campaign over the weekend and every match saw the home team emerge with at least a point. For clubs like Legon Cities, Nsoatreman FC and Berekum Chelsea this was good news with victories to begin their seasons. However for a club like Asante Kotoko a scoreless draw at home against newly promoted Heart of Lions was not a pleasing result.

Kotoko appeared to be in control during the first half but could not find a way into the Heart of Lions goal. As the match wore on the newly promoted side gained confidence and almost escaped the Baba Yara Stadium with a victory but had a goal controversially disallowed for offsides. The other top division newcomers, Bofoakwa Tano, also kept a clean sheet away from home in a 0-0 draw at Accra Great Olympics.

Accra Hearts of Oak took part in the curtain raiser to the season but the Phobians fell to Real Tamale United by a 1-0 score on Friday. Hearts struggled to find their stride away from home and RTU found the winning goal in the final moments of second half stoppage time through Afriyie Owusu who headed in a corner kick to send the home support into joy.

All the scores from the opening weekend are below followed by highlights from three matches.
