Ghana Premier League: Kotoko’s defense fails at another crucial moment

Asante Kotoko head coach Seydou Zerbo could not hide his frustration as he walked off from a televised post-match interview following the Porcupine Warriors’ 1-1 draw at Tamale City on Wednesday. Babamu Ibrahim leveled the match late for the hosts in the Northern Region, taking advantage of a poor clearance from a long throw-in to smash his shot in from fifteen yards out only two minutes after Issah Nyaabila’s own goal appeared to give Kotoko three points. The Kumasi-based club remain one point back of league leaders Aduana Stars and it looks like they will drop out of second position by the time Thursday’s fixtures are complete.

Zerbo attributed the disappointing result to a lack of concentration from his side and an individual defensive error but the Kotoko attack remains stale and lacking in ideas with only one occasion in their last seven matches where the reigning champions have scored more than one goal. Aduana Stars have an opportunity to extend their league lead on Thursday at home against bottom side Kotoku Royals while Kotoko’s rivals Hearts of Oak will be on the road at King Faisal with a chance to overtake Zerbo’s side on the table.
