In a relegation clash, Elmina Sharks rode a brilliant start with two goals from talented young forward Benjamin Boateng to a 2-1 home victory over Techiman Eleven Wonders on Friday at the Nduom Sports Complex to boost Sharks out of the relegation zone. The win moves Sharks up five spots on the Ghana Premier League table to 11th while the uncertainty continues for Eleven Wonders, who only sit two points out of the bottom three and will watch with anxiety as the rest of the table plays this weekend.
It took under two minutes for Elmina Sharks to find the opener through Boateng. Ibrahim Suraj floated a free kick into the Wonders penalty box that was cleared out only to the edge of the area, where Boateng collected and then shot an accurate effort off the bounce that went in off the post. It was a nightmare start for Techiman, who only have one road victory in 2021, and it only got worse soon after. Boateng was the man again as latched onto a long ball over the top of the Wonders defense and easily rounded keeper Abdulai Ibrahim before applying a smooth finish to double the home side’s lead.
Sharks’ dominant start showed cracks as the match progressed and Eleven Wonders certainly had their chances to get back into the match. Sharks keeper Martey Bawa Lord went way out on his attempt to deal with an aerial ball and fortunately for him his defenders were back to clear a header that was going toward the empty net. Wonders striker Alex Asamoah had a goal disallowed towards the end of the first half to prevent the road side from getting one back.
Abass Ganiu got the goal Wonders were craving ten minutes into the second half and Techiman also had a long range effort crack off the crossbar, but Sharks managed to hold on for a precious three points.
