GPL Weekend Wrap: Top of table clash between Kotoko and Great Olympics ends scoreless, Hearts of Oak further Inter Allies misery

Asante Kotoko and their league-best defensive record did well to hold Ghana Premier League upstarts Great Olympics to a 0-0 stalemate at the Accra Spots Stadium on Friday, maintaining their slim lead at the top of the table to start off the weekend’s fixtures. The first-half saw few opportunities for either team and the trend continued until the urgency increased a bit towards the end of the match. Goalkeepers Razak Abalora and Benjamin Asare each passed their respective tests to keep the affair scoreless.

On Sunday the Accra Sports Stadium was once again the setting as Hearts of Oak furthered their title campaign, riding a first-half own goal to defeat last-placed Inter Allies. The visitors had their chances early on but failed to execute and allowed the hosts to obtain control of the game. In the end the league’s worst attack had too little firepower to find an equalizer and Inter Allies are now six points away from escaping the relegation zone.

Only three points separate top side Kotoko from fifth-place Karela United following the weekend’s matchups, with Medeama and Hearts of Oak the big winners courtesy of each getting three points.
