Jaraaf end historic CAFCC group stage campaign on top of Group C with draw against Sfaxien

Senegal’s Jaraaf already had a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals clinched heading into their final fixture, but also went on to seal the top spot in Group C with a 0-0 road draw at CS Sfaxien in Tunisia on Wednesday. Jaraaf end the group stage with eleven points to Sfaxien’s ten and winning the group will be a worthy reward for their excellent play. In the other game in Group C, Burkina Faso’s Salitas fell 2-1 to Tunisian club Étoile du Sahel in a dead rubber.

Sfaxien had the best of the opportunities in the scoreless draw between the two qualified teams but Jaraaf once again showed they were up for the challenge of playing on the road. One excellent buildup towards the end of the first-half sent Aymen Harzi in, but the winger put his cross too far beyond Mohamed Ali for the Libyan to put his finish on target. Firas Chaouat had the other great chance in the second half for Sfaxien but was well denied from close range by Jaraaf goalkeeper Pape Ndiaye.

Regular goalscorers Hamza Lahmar and Souleymane Coulibaly tallied in Étoile’s victory against Salitas to finish third in the group and doom the Burkinabé club to last place. Lahmar arrived late in the Salitas penalty area to collect a low cross from Aymen Sfaxi and send his finish into the roof of the net. Coulibaly did well to provide a poacher’s finish just after halftime, his low shot just making it across the goal line. Salitas found a consolation late on but never looked capable of getting a point in any of their road matches this campaign.

Highlights are below.
