Mathare United currently sit in last place in Kenya’s FKF Premier League and chairman Bob Munro previously expressed his dismay at the lack of support from the league when it comes to financially supporting the clubs in the country. With only eleven points and seven matches remaining to make up a twelve-point deficit that will get them out of the relegation zone, the Nairobi club may be on its last legs after being forced to forfeit Sunday’s match against Bandari.
Munro issued a statement explaining that the club cannot financially support its players and travel due to the lack of a consistent league sponsor and failure of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to pay royalties from past sponsorships. If Mathare United forfeit two more matches than they will be automatically relegated and many fear that will be the death blow to a club known as the Slum Boys that prides itself on providing opportunities for those from the poorer sections of Nairobi.
Capital FM Kenya has more on the dire financial straits of the club and why they are in the predicament they are in.
