After playing both matches of their First Round tie for the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Cape Verde in Morocco, Sierra Leone’s domestic-based national team will be closer to home when they take on Mali in neighboring Liberia for their home leg. The Leone Stars will host Mali at the recently renovated Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in the Monrovia suburb of Paynesville for the first leg, set to take place in late August. The Doe Sports Complex installed a new artificial turf pitch that saw its first use on July 24 when Liberia were defeated 3-0 by Senegal in the first leg of their CHAN First Round tie.
After the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) made a request to the Liberia Football Association (LFA), the LFA and the Liberian government agreed to allow the Sierra Leone national side use the venue for no charge as a gesture of goodwill between neighbors. In addition, Sierra Leonean clubs competing in CAF interclub competition will also host the home legs at the venue with Bo Rangers set to play against Algerian champions CR Belouizdad in the CAF Champions League while FC Kallon face Benin’s Buffles du Borgou in early September.
